About the Author
John Lewis is the co-author of the best-selling introductory Java programming book Java Software Solutions , as well as Java Software Structures, Programming with Alice and Java , and books for AP computer science. He teaches courses at both Virginia Tech and Radford University. He received his Ph.D. degree from Virginia Tech.
Peter DePasquale is an assistant professor of computer science at the College of New Jersey (TCNJ). He is the author of Addison-Wesley’s Java Backpack Reference Guide and Addison-Wesley’s C++ Backpack Reference Guide, as well as Programming with Alice and Java .
Joe Chase is an associate professor of computer science at Radford University. He is the co-author of Java Software Structures and Java Software Structures for AP* Computer Science AB.

Awkward Learning Curve with Broken Examples

I got this for school, and it's just a really poorly managed/organized textbook. Also, several of the examples won't even compile out of the GUI chapter. I certainly wouldn't recommend this to any beginner.

Excellent beginning Java book!

This book is a great first resource for someone who has no prior experience with Java. It includes programming problems at the end of each chapter to allow you to practice what you have read about.

Good book, but there are others just as good for less.

The book is a good introduction to Java, but others are just as good for a lot less. The book has many typos, which are annoying in the text but cause problems in the program listings. Also, program listings are only available once you register, and your registration code is only good once. It's not too big a deal to type the programs in yourself, but every other book on programming, regardless of language, makes the source freely and easily available. The author isn't divulging state secrets here, it's all beginning to novice-level code.
