About the Author
Shanthi Sekaran teaches creative writing at California College of the Arts, and is a member of the Portuguese Artists Colony and the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto. She is the author of The Prayer Room and her work has appeared in the New York Times, Best New American Voices and Canteen as well as online at Zyzzyva and Mutha Magazine. A California native, she lives in Berkeley with her husband and two children. Lucky Boy is her second novel.

Must Read

Beautifully written novel which could be a true story. As a Court Appointed Special Advocate who recommends to the court the best home for a juvenile, this book brings the attention to the fact that many times an illegal immigrant has no control over the fate of their child through no fault of their own. Which is better for a child - to be raised in a home where a mother can barely provide for her child or in a two parent, loving, financially solvent environment, that offers every opportunity to a child?

The heart of mothers

Timely topic sheds light on the problems inherent in immigration. The novel causes the reader to empathize with two mothers: one a birth mother, the other an adoptive mother. A beautiful little boy loves them both. The question is to whom will he ultimately belong. What is fair? What is in his best interests? Through her skillful presentation, the author causes the reader to see the dilemma from both sides.
Highly recommend as a solid piece of interpretive literature.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. It truly spoke of a parent's love for a child whether that child be a biological one or an adopted one. Each mother in the story had my heart and there were no easy answers about which woman was better for this little boy. The characters were well developed and the writing was brilliant. A bit of a heartbreaker, but also a story of love and hope.
