Christmas at Claridge's, by Karen Swan

"This was where her dreams drifted to if she didn't blot her nights out with drink; this was where her thoughts settled if she didn't fill her days with chat. She remembered this tiny, remote foreign village on a molecular level and the sight of it soaked into her like water into sand, because this was where her old life had ended and her new one had begun." Portobello - home to the world-famous street market, Notting Hill Carnival and Clem Alderton. She's the queen of the scene, the girl everyone wants to be or be with. But beneath the morning-after makeup, Clem is keeping a secret, and when she goes too far one reckless night she endangers everything - her home, her job and even her adored brother's love. Portofino - a place of wild beauty and old-school glamour, and where a neglected villa has been bought by a handsome stranger. He wants Clem to restore it for him and it seems like the answer to all her problems - except that Clem has been there once before and vowed, for her own protection, never to return ...

Gripping and heart-wrenching
By Z. de Ruiter
Clem Alderton grew up in Portobello in London and feels right at home wandering the famous street market or having a cupcake for lunch at Hummingbird Bakery. She now shares an expensive flat with her brother just streets away from her brother's company, Alderton Hide, where she too works, though her job comprises of little more than being the face of the company to clients who are unable to resist the charms of the gorgeous young woman.

Seemingly without a care in the world, and unattached thanks to her 12-week-rule when it comes to dating the hot men that fall at her feet, Clem is enjoying her life to the fullest. She spends her days going from one party to the next only stopping occasionally to show her face at work or her parents' house when summoned.

Just as people around her start to wonder when Clem will finally grow up and be responsible, she is in her late Twenties after all and hasn't held down a proper job yet, she once again shows them that she's an egoistical party girl as she ruins Alderton Hide's prized show model (worth several hundred thousand pounds) and with it the contracts the company needed to stay in business.

I admit that for the longest of time I was struggling to get into this novel. I was completely deceived by the book's cute cover and title and foolishly failed to properly read the blurb before diving in. Because of that I was expecting a sugar-sweet and predictable chick-lit story, with a nice and funny main protagonist and possibly a plethora of eligible bachelors, which this is anything but.

Instead main character Clementine, or Clem as she's known to friends and family, is a spoiled rich girl that at first I found incredibly unlikeable. In fact I would go as far as to say that her selfish and foolish antics really annoyed me and I was surprised that her family, and her brother in particular, let her get away with it for so long.

But of course there is much more to it than Clem just being spoiled and immature for her age and when the story shifts from Portobello in London to Portofino in Italy the reader gets to see a really different side to the character's personality and she instantly becomes a much more interesting and intriguing individual.

I don't want to say more about that part of the novel as I don't want to spoil it for prospective readers but let's just say that the heart-wrenching revelations will have you on the edge of your seat until the final page. Clem might not be the easiest person to care for in the beginning, but stick with her and this book and you'll be rewarded with a gripping and thought-provoking story.

Christmas at Claridge's
By P. Newhart
Clem is the stereotypical party girl, living it up in Portobello with her best friend Stella and working at her brother Tom's furnishing company. When she makes a massive error that threatens the company's future, Clem is forced to take on a large job for the company in Portofino, Italy for a rich, handsome client who has made it clear that he is after Clem as well as a remodeled house. What may seem like a dream job to others is a nightmare to Clem as her deepest, darkest secrets are held in Portofino, ones that she has no desire to relive or examine in her mind.

This was an interesting book that actually has very little to do with Christmas. Still a good read, but just not quite what I expected. Through the first half, I was so irritated by Clem that I was having trouble caring at all what happened to her or what her secrets were. She develops into a more complex character though, and draws the reader into her allure that all the other characters seem to feel right from the beginning. The descriptions of both Portobello and Portofino take the reader right there, and the large cast of characters are all interesting and explored fairly deeply with many having their own side stories. Recommended as a fun read, and not just for Christmas!

Christmas at Claridge's
By Clare O'Beara
This is a reasonable contemporary romance, but I should warn readers that it is about neither Christmas nor Claridges.

The story involves a young lady, Clem, whose irresponsible behaviour goes too far and she loses her brother's bespoke leather fittings firm a contract. Desperate to make amends, Clem and her pal Stella, a fashion designer with a stall in Portobello, scrabble together bits of leather off-cuts to sell as designer goods. Stella has the eye, Clem's bought enough luxury goods to have an eye too, and Clem's a good model.

Then the story moves to Portofino on the Italian coast where a new luxury contract has been landed, and in one of those staggering coincidences...

The rest of the story moodily explores Clem's past, present and future life, with a final chapter tacked on at the end where we see some Christmas decorations being put up at the London hotel Claridges in a few pages. I didn't find it very exciting and the amount of money being spent on designer goods, plus the total preoccupation with labels, I find strange. But some people are like that. We do want Clem and her family to be happy, despite her habit of falling for men she doesn't even know.
