Friday, February 12 1993. Two outwardly unremarkable ten-year-old boys, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, began their day playing truant and ended it running an errand for a local video shop. In between they abducted and killed the toddler James Bulger. The Sleep of Reason is the harrowing, sensitive, definitive account of this terrible crime and its consequences.

In a new Preface (which considers the re-arrest of Jon Venables in February 2010) David James Smith writes: 'It is as true now as it was then that the murder has never really been explained and the motive for the crime remains a mystery. This book, the result of considerable research and a painstaking, sometimes distressing assembly of the facts, was my attempt to offer some insight and understanding.'

Well-written and factual

If you're interested in the Bulger murder, this is a good, complete account that details not only the crime itself, but covers the prior lives of the killers, and the trial and investigation. Don't be put off by the lacklustre cover, which looks like a college text. This is an immediate, lively telling, which concentrates on relating the facts of the case. The author notes up front that there is no speculation, invented dialogue, etc. The nightmarish casualness of the killers comes through well in the narrative.

The book was originally published in 1994, only a year after the murder. This edition is an updated one, from 2011. It includes a final chapter about developments in the case from 1994 to 2011. The author has also decided to share his clearly-labelled speculations about unresolved aspects of the case, including motive, in the new edition. It is, I think, a wise addition. There's also an active table of contents, always helpful, but no index or footnotes.

The book could have been improved by photos and (especially) maps. Everyone (I think) knows what the boys looked like, and a map isn't strictly necessary for following along with the narrative, but it does help. I kept going to Google as I read. In looking online at pictures of the murder site, I was shocked by how open and visible it was - not at all closed in and hidden as I'd imagined. Pictures like that would have helped in visualizing the scene, I think.

In the end, four stars. Well-written, packed with facts, but needed an index and at least a few pictures of the crime scene.

Well put

Good narrative of all that happened in 1993 with at the end a very useful and even "logical" explanation for this horrific crime. The big question why, what everbody wants to know, is partly explained by the author. It can never be a wholly satisfying explanation for all that happened and of course nobody knows what the killers really thought and did at the time. But I found it a good read and it has given me a lot of insights.

A Fine Study of A Truly Awful, Sad Event

When James Bulger was abducted and killed I was a 20 year old college student in a quiet corner of Vermont. Aside from the general, horrific details, and a vague recollection of the security camera images, I remembered little of it. Recently the case was mentioned during a public radio discussion here in New York, which dealt with the topic of juvenile offenders being tried and sentenced as adults, and this prompted my interest in learning more about the case, and this, in turn, lead me to Mr. Smith's book. All in all, the book is a very well reasoned, well researched, and critically thought out examination of an internationally publicized and universally reviled crime. There's no escaping the thoroughly depressing and terrible nature of the murder itself, perpetrated against a victim as innocent and defenseless as a toddler, by two small boys who were also children. The youth of the victim, coupled with the fact that the starting point of the events leading to the murder were captured and frozen for all time in some grainy CCTV frames, beamed around the UK, and eventually the world, tends to fix and amplify one's sense of revulsion and horror. As the author illustrates early in the book -- children killing other children isn't new, or even particularly novel, but because of those chilling images of the initial abduction of a smiling, beautiful baby, this case seemingly generated more media coverage and outrage than many have, before or since. The book, which was originally published in 1994, was updated with some new material in 2011, after one of the killers, Jon Venables, had been re-imprisoned on a charge of possessing child pornography. I think he's been released again since. We'll probably never really know the "why" to any satisfaction, but the author comes as close as anyone aside from the killers has, or likely will. Regardless, in the end you're just left with an empty and sad feeling that this ever happened; sad for poor baby James, and his parents. I even feel sad for the Venables, the Thompsons, the policemen and policewomen involved, and, of course, for the "Liverpool 38": the many witnesses who had the misfortune of crossing paths with James and his killers, as they walked him on to his eventual death. The eternal "What ifs" are palpable, even 20 + years and thousands of miles removed from the railway bank. It's almost more like a bizarre cosmic accident than a crime. The unfortunate reality is that there are no evil born demons, no amount of slasher film viewing, and violent video game playing that can adequately explain why this happened or will happen again. It's an all too human peculiarity which we still don't really understand, and probably never truly will. And therein lies the true horror of it.

This book is written by one of my favourite authors.

Austen builds on the world she created in Bait and Switch and once again keeps you hanging on to every word, wondering what's going to happen next. Sh uses the Toon World as a way to parallel the struggles of the LGBT community and th struggles they can face.

Janet struggles with relationships and with her inner identity, trying to figure out a way to balance who she is and who people expect her to be.

Seriously awaiting the third book in the series.

Excellent book.

Takes you back into the world from Bait and Switch. Strong and thought provoking writing. Really made the characters come alive. Read it in just over a day, was very hard to put down.

The subject matter was great, really taking hold to mirror whats happening in our world in its own way.

I highly recommend. You couldn't go wrong with this one, read it.

A unique and fascinating world

An excellent companion novel to 'Bait and Switch' Crowder's unique take on a reality where humans can transform into cartoons is exquisite. More than a simple fantasy, Crowder uses the transformational conceit to explore the issues that gender nonconforming people endure within our own world. But more than this, Crowder's worldbuilding takes a universe not unlike that depicted in Rodger Rabbit into entirely new and daring territory in entirely new and astonishing directions.

Excellent book on communication for the workplace.

As a psychologist, I appreciate books that carefully translate research findings into practical advice. This book does this. Rather than claiming a "brand new never before seen magic solution" (be careful of those), the authors present an excellent systematic summary of what has been learned from decades of research on effective communication research. Although they present some of the research to help the reader understand, I recognized far more research findings that influence their advice than they bother to mention. They give some simple yet effective strategies for common communication problems such as "raising delicate issues", and "responding to criticism". Careful explanations are given for how to prepare for and respond to such situations. The authors avoid the common approach of authors of giving one "right" response to problems, and instead guide the reader to understand the purpose of each step they recommend, allowing the reader far more flexibility in implementing the ideas taught. This allows the reader to create their own style without having an overly rehearsed feel to it.

I've read many books on communication, and this is the best one I've found so far. The authors take care to clarify how various problems can arise, and offer useful advice for dealing with them. This book is far more complete than many "pop press" books on the topic, which are more about sounding fancy and fun to read than actually being useful. Nevertheless, this book is surprisingly easy to read. There is appropriate repetition, elaboration and suggestions for practice to actually help the interested reader learn the skills taught and understand why they are helpful.

Their insights and examples have helped me craft class discussions concerning the power of actively listening to the words of others.

Life is Eternal Newness....this work by Ilie Cioara, who was an enlightened mystic from Eastern Europe, is his third published book .

It is magnificent in its poetic imagery and rhythm which takes the mind straight into the heart of what it means to be alive...the boundlessness and freedom and eternal newness that is our inherent nature.

Ilie talks to us about who we are and what we are, in a way that is so charged with enlightened energy, that it jars us out of our habitual ways of thinking and believing and opens us to the possibilities of living life in the recognition of our unlimited nature.

He opens our minds to the possibility that the universe is limitless and that the universe, is what we are, an undivided whole teeming with brilliance, joy, compassion and love. This opening of our minds, is truly the flowering of enlightenment, something he deeply wanted to share with others.

One can actually feel his wondrous presence while we read his words, almost as if he is guiding us to discover what he had so many years ago.

I particularly loved his description of what happens when our bodily form passes away. I have never read such a detailed description of what we can expect when the body is no more.

This book is a transmission, an initiation into our deepest most profound nature. I trust your heart will open to the vastness of joy and loveliness that lies at the core of all life, through the potency of this exquisite work. This book will go down in history as one of the greatest transformational works of all time. I am so grateful it made its way into my arms and into my heart.

LIFE IS ETERNAL NEWNESS

Ilie Cioara was a highly celebrated Self Realised Mystic, whose renowned series of books on Non Dualism are remarkable for their clarity and poetic depth of vision. He follows in the lines of the great Indian and European Sages such as Ramana Maharshi, Eckhart Tolle and J.Krishnamurti.
Most of his easy to read short chapters, especially the one entitled 'Life After the So Called Death", contain beautiful passages of exquisitely inspired mystical poetry. Another highly original Chapter called 'The Earthquake', is based on the Author's actual experience of three of these highly traumatic eveents, and is full of surprisingly original observations.
I strongly recommend this most enlightening book which has been beautifully translated by Petrica Verdes, and is another major addition to this important genre of divinely inspired spiritual literature especially designed to enlighten the reader, and bring him or her to the actual point of Self Realisation.

The best backup book available, but I have requests for the next edition

W. Curtis Preston is the king of backups, and his book Backup and Recovery (BAR) is easily the best book available on the subject. Preston makes many good decisions in this book, covering open source projects and considerations for commercial solutions. Tool discussions are accompanied by sound advice and plenty of short war stories. If the author addresses the few concerns I have in his next edition, that should be a five star book.

The best aspect of BAR is the author's obvious expertise in this subject. He does a good job sharing lots of his knowledge with the reader. Probably the most valuable conceptual framework I learned in BAR is the difference between backups and archives. Pages 696-7 summarize this nicely: "Backups are the secondary copy of primary data... Archives are the primary copy of secondary data." In this section and elsewhere, Preston describes how archives are the repository one should create when answering ediscovery requests and similar queries -- not backups. This is an extremely powerful idea and I plan to see how my employer deals with this issue.

The second best aspect of BAR involves multiple chapters on backing up various databases. One can usually find similar coverage in single books on specific databases, but having all information in one book is useful for purposes of comparison. Chapter 15 provides an overview of the entire problem by discussing terminology and features found in many databases. This chapter helps storage admins understand the database admin world. Of particular note was the coverage of Microsoft Exchange, which the book calls a specialized database. I had not thought of Exchange in this light, but it's true -- especially when Microsoft indicates future versions will have SQL Server replacing Extensible Storage Engine. I only read chapters on SQL Server, Exchange, and MySQL.

The third best aspect of BAR includes OS-specific chapters on bare-metal recovery. Although my OS of choice (FreeBSD) didn't merit its own chapter, I felt the material in the bare-metal section was robust enough to help me perform this work if necessary. I really only read the chapters on Windows/Linux and ignored Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, and Mac OS X.

BAR is a good book, so why not five stars? First, I thought the chapters on open source backup options (especially ch 7 on "Open-Source Near CDP") were weak. I wanted to learn a lot more about rdiff-backup, for example, but the tool merited about 5 pages and introduced only the simplest possible invocation. Rsnapshot was also undercovered. It seemed like too many pages were spent on utilities I would probably never use (given newer options) like dump and cpio. I was also not confident I could get very far with Amanda, BackupPC, or Bacula given the detail given to each open source product. (Regarding BackupPC -- I had to guess it was open source and then only found out the truth when its Web site at sf.net was mentioned late in the chapter!)

Second, some topics never really made sense. For example, I still do not understand how snapshots actually work. Calling it a "picture" means nothing to me. Snapshots are mentioned throughout the text, and the explanation that finally appears near the end of the book in a miscellanea chapter doesn't help.

Third, I would really have liked to hear more about services offering backup to the Internet, like Amazon's S3 and others. This MUST be covered in the next edition.

Finally, although the book has lots of advice, it would have been nice to have had a case study chapter where multiple example enterprises demonstrate their backup and recovery solutions. After finishing the book I have lots of ideas floating around, but seeing how a one-person, 100-person, 10,000-person, and 500,000-person environment implement BAR would be greatly appreciated.

Best Backup Book I've Seen

When I picked up this text, I kind of expected it to be a bit sparse in some areas. After all, it's an ambitious book. With individual chapters on every database from DB2, Oracle and Sybase to MySQL, Postgres and SQL Server. In addition he also covers OS backups on Solaris, Linux, AIX, HP-UX, and Mac OS X.

Preston though, succeeds, and succeeds with flying colors. What I was struck by most of all, after reading it, is his clear breadth of knowledge in the subject of backups. Each of the different databases alone do things differently, and have a lot of different concepts, and vernacular to describe it.

He starts the book with the basics, what backing up is all about, why you do it, and what to consider. What are you backing up and why? How often, and using what method? Roll-your-own solution scripting with unix utils like dd, cpio, or tar, go with an open source solution such as Amanda, Bacula, or BackupPC, or consider various commercial solutions. And lastly, don't forget testing and verifying your backups. Preston doesn't let anything through the cracks.

I have worked on Unix for years and years, but my sweet spot is working with databases. So I read the chapters on Oracle and MySQL very carefully. In both cases I learned something new. For instance during an Oracle hotbackup, did you know that changes to datafiles are *NOT* frozen. Learn how Oracle reconstructs your data using a hotbackup, by reading his careful discussion on the topic. Databases are not simple beasts, and the backup considerations are not trivial. Nonetheless, I would recommend this book as your reference for doing database backups on any of these platforms.

Lastly I like the writing style. He calls it "champagne backup on a beer budget". Good stuff. You'll find this book interesting to read, full of detail when you need it and pointed when necessary. Go pickup a copy.

In the realm of important things in the world of computers are good backups and equally important is the ability to properly restore those backups. My initial attraction to this book had to do with it being tapered toward open system solutions. I am an avid user of Linux and open-source software, so I was interesting in learning about the free tools that the author writes about.

The author starts out by discussing "The Philosophy of Backup" which covers why backups are so important and how you to find a solution that both meets your needs and your budget. Chapter two goes over what to backup, how often and at what levels. It also discussed what types of disaster to be prepared for, automation, storage, testing and things to look out for on various OS's.

Chapters 3-7 cover open-source backup utilities. In chapter three the author discusses and provides examples of how to use basic utilities such as dump, cpio, tar and dd for Unix systems, ntbackup and System Restore for the Window's crowd, ditto for Mac, and the GNU versions of tar, cpio, and rsync. Chapter's 4-6 discuss Amanda, BackupPC and Bacula. Chapter seven digs into near-continuous data protection and how the open-source community is achieving this, and what tools to use.

By chapter 8 and 9 the author is discussing commercial backup solutions. This section is different from the last in that it doesn't really discuss specific tools and how to use them, but rather it discusses the features of commercial products. This section also covers the various types of backup hardware on the market in an effort to help the reader decide what media best meets their needs.

Chapters 10-14 covers "Bare-Metal Recovery". The author takes you through the process of a bare-metal recovery with Solaris, Linux, Windows, HP-UX, AIX, and Mac OS X.

By chapters 15-22 the author has moved on to database backups and takes you through the various solutions for Oracle, Sybase, IBM DB2, SQL Server, Exchange, PostegreSQL, and MySQL. Finally the author wraps up the book with VMware server backup solutions and discussing data protection.

I found this book to be a very interesting read. I especially enjoyed the open-source, bare-metal recovery, and database sections. The author does an excellent job of taking the reader through all of the steps including example syntax needed to perform a backup and restore with the various tools discussed. Another high point is that the author includes current tools and techniques. This book holds lots of real world wisdom and I would recommend it to any system administrator, developer, or user who is interested in protecting their data.

About the Author

Susan Simon, a writer and event planner in New York City,  is the author of several cookbooks including Visual Vegetables, The Nantucket Table, The Nantucket Holiday Table,  Contorni, and Insalate.  She is a co-author of the James Beard Award winning cookbook, Pasta Sfoglia, and translator of Italy Dish by Dish by Monica Cesari Sartoni (The Little Bookroom, November 2010).   Susan writes a bi-monthly food column for The Nantucket Inquirer & Mirror and contributes to Nantucket Today. 

 

Italian-born photojournalist and stylist Nally Bellati was raised in England. She has contributed photographs and features to all major Italian magazines and has had columns in Harper’s Bazaar Uomo and L’Uomo Vogue. Today she works as a society photographer with fashion houses and design companies. Her candid party pictures are distributed to newspapers and magazines worldwide. Her book New Italian Design was translated into four languages.

beautiful but not very useful

i really wanted to love this book. it's beautifully put together with stunning photos, small enough to fit easily into a bag and supposedly the perfect book for my recent shopping trip to marrakech. unfortunately, this book has three major problems which render it pretty useless.

1. no "best of" list - if you don't have much time to shop and you want to find out what the author thinks is the best place for carpets or slippers, you can't use the book for that. yes, the list would be subjective, but at least it would be something. instead, you have to read through the entire book to find mention of the items you're most interested in. which leads me to disappointment #2

2. there is no index or guide that breaks down the stores by type or product. she arranges the book by walking tour, which is nice because it gives you an easy plan of attack. unfortunately, you can't search an index or anything to quickly find a certain good easily.

3. no words of advice or bargaining techniques. we all know you will get ripped off in the medina and boutique stores are expensive. that said, what is a good price for a caftan or tea set? she does not give any help in knowing what an average or decent sale should be. a shopping book should provide this advice when so much shopping happens in stores that aren't fixed price.

these critiques could be easily addressed in future editions of the book, should it be reprinted. if they are, i think this would be a great buy for anyone planning a trip to marrakech.

Good for navigating the Marrakech shopping scene

Like a number of other reviewers it seems, I am not the biggest fan of Marrakech, but I did really like this book. The pictures and the descriptions were really so beautiful and interesting, I read the book cover to cover on the plane ride there (didn't hurt that it was 15 hours either...). I did two of the full walks, one in the Medina and the Gueliz walk and then went to a few other shops that looked interesting or had something we wanted. Frankly, I found the Medina a little too grimy for my taste, but I liked having this book to point me in the right direction. In the Medina, you can walk past stall after stall all selling pretty much the same thing. How can you tell which place is good for rugs or babouche or whatever? It's nice to have someone point you to what they at least think is the best quality or most interesting stuff. The shopkeepers of the stores in this book were all very nice, although not necessarily any more professional than at other shops (i.e. they would still pursue you down the street trying to interest you in buying something). I greatly enjoyed shopping in Gueliz compared to shopping in the Medina. The goods were more stylish, the prices were marked, and the sales pressure was nil.

The downsides to this book are 1) As another reviewer pointed out, there is no breakdown of the stores by what they sell, so if you want to buy say a lamp, you have to look at every listing 2) There was no indication what the prices of the items might be, so you have no idea if you getting taken advantage of in your negotiations 3) Recommendations for restaurants or cafes along the walks would have been appreciated (there were a few, but not for every walk) 4) Manager of our riad said that some of the listings were out of date, although I did not encounter any

Another thing to note is that this book basically identifies you as an American to anyone who knows of it (certainly the shopkeepers mentioned in the book, I'm not sure if other shopkeepers or touts in the Medina would know about this book). While we didn't face any discrimination because of this (nor would I expect any Marrakech shopkeeper to discriminate against a paying customer), it's just something to keep in mind.

Overall, I loved the style of this book and I would love it if there were more to other great, but overwhelming, shopping cities such as Bangkok or Istanbul.

A total fantasy

This book features lovely photographs, but the the premise is a total fantasy. Marrakech is a wonderful place to visit, but it is not a good place to shop. There are a few cute stores which are on the pricey side. Rather, the retail scene is dominated by hundreds of small stalls in the souks which are a labyrinth to try to find your way around in. The vendors feature virtually identical merchandise over and over and over again with no attempt at originality.
Things worth buying are babouche, the whimsical backless slippers made of lambskin. They come in a dazzling array of crayon box color combinations and are very comfortable. Also look for thuya wood small boxes, salad bowls ect. They are handcarved of burlwood and look far more expensive than they are. Likewise, find the rare argan oil which is usually made into cosmetic creams, although when roasted the argan nut produces a wonderful cooking and salad oil. No matter sometimes it is diluted with cheaper oils so you don't always know what you are getting. Saffron, mint tea, preserved lemon and tagine spice mixes are also interesting; however beware of bottles leaking in your suitcase!
I would avoid knockoff handbags, sunglasses and wristwatches. Also, avoid the fake pashminas, rugs, ugly caftans, etc. that you will see over and over again.
The local handicrafts, jewelry, djellabas, rugs, caftans, ect all have a lot of potential. However the local vendors haven't picked up on any new ideas and have no knowledge of merchandising. As mentioned the mechandise is mindnumbingly repetitive. Beware,you will have to haggle. Don't bother combing through the hundreds of stalls looking for something original. After you've seen a dozen vendors you've probably seen all there is to see. Keep going for the experience even if you don't find anything.
Also, foreign women are sometimes fondled or touched inappropriately after dark. It's best to be alert, walk in a group, and don't stay out too late. Plus beware of taxi drivers. Negotiate a price BEFORE you get in the car as they have meters but rarely use them. Also beware of guides who get kickbacks for steering you to certain rug dealers.
