Fascinating and profound

In this book, Miki Kashtan leads us towards a vision of a world that works for all. This gives me hope at a time when I often feel overwhelmed by our current ways of being together on this planet which seem so unsustainable. What got us here, she says, is negating our needs and emotions (traced back to the Enlightenment and earlier influences) with a view of human nature that assumes we are motivated by self interest and that we have a need to control our unruly impulses.
In the process of exploring these influences, Miki tackles huge questions such as the root causes of violence and oppression, fundamental problems with our economic systems, the place of money in our lives, and much more. She also adds to Freud's work by suggesting an integration of social and historical context with psychological analysis. Although this isn't the first time I've encountered most of these ideas, I found her insights to be fascinating and profound.
In addition, Miki gives a touching and poignant psychosocial analysis of her own childhood while relating her life to the bigger picture of social influences on individual lives. All this might sound somewhat depressing if it weren't for the fact that she suggests major ideas for how change could happen. She advocates transforming our relationship with our human needs, making the assumption that all actions are an attempt to meet needs and that human needs are universal and fundamentally life affirming. She writes: "conflicts, suffering and the many destructive aspects of human life all are the result of ignoring, mistrusting, denying, and suppressing rather than understanding, accepting and embracing our needs."
To me this book represents a profound way of revisioning who we are and what we are doing that recovers the essential sacredness of our place in nature and our fundamental interrelatedness and interdependence. Miki provides many practical ways to begin transforming ourselves together with our social systems and institutions that goes way beyond a typical self-help book.
I didn't find it an easy book to read in that the complex nature of the threads she weaves throughout will take me some time to fully digest. I highly recommend the book for anyone who wants to seriously ponder the big questions of our day. Miki's answers are definitely not easy to put into practice as she fully explains, yet starting on this path would seem to have immense potential benefit for anyone who embraces this journey and ultimately for all of us.

Balm for despair, hope for the future

Miki Kashtan has been a great teacher and inspiration to me on my journey with principled nonviolence and Nonviolent Communication (NVC).
This book revitalized my commitment to NVC when I was feeling really low about it.
If you're yearning for a better world, or despairing about the state of this world, it's worth the read, whether or not you know what NVC is.

Finally, it's here!

I've only started reading the book this week. Here is but a piece of what I've experienced thus far.
The journal of Miki's mother recording Miki's early life and Miki's accompanying thoughts about the journal, has gripped my heart. I'm experiencing as a mother, the long term impact of a mother's words and I'm moved to remember my own experience as a child and the possible experiences of my children. Through the practice of self empathy, I'm having great compassion for parents and children everywhere.
One action I am now taking, is writing journal thoughts of my adult children and my grandchildren with the intent of enriching their lives after my death. I thought it was too late or 'too much' keeping up with it to do something tangible and lasting that would support their vision of knowing and loving themselves though my experience with them. Knowing the impact of words, the lifelong mark they can leave in another's life, why would I wait and tell myself it's too late!
I've known Miki as my teacher for many years. Again and again, the experience I have through her way of entering what life brings, supports me in living a life of 'awakened transparency.' Along with this deep desire, I'm quieted and reassured by something in me that is reminded of the courage, love, and truth involved in living a life of nonviolence.
Because of the honest, authentic, and transparent life Miki Kashtan lives, I recommend with trust this book to everyone beginning or reexamining living a fully integrated life of authentic expression.
For those of us on this path already, WOW!!! We're Celebrating this book is finally here! I'm imagining it's usefulness in my life with worn and tattered pages!
