The classic cocktail book; not for beginners

The Savoy guide has for a long time been seen as the end-all be-all of cocktail books. The plethora of classic recipes and witty quips the pepper the pages make this a favorite of cocktail aficionados everywhere. There are only two warnings I have about this book: 1. Many of the recipes refer to either out of production ingredients or ingredients whose recipes have changed. Therefore one should take caution when trying to make the cocktails using the exact recipes. 2. For one newly initiated into the cocktail world, this book gives no real introduction into the proper techniques and principles behind making cocktails.

A Piece of Cocktail History

What can I say about this cocktail recipe classic? If you are a fan of culinary culture or the Prohibition era, this is a must for you collection. While many recipes are old fashioned and not always what have come to be known as “standard” recipes, the combinations and names will give you interesting insight into the cocktail culture of the 1930’s. I recently picked up a copy and I’m really enjoying the author’s notes and comments throughout. Craddock has an excellent dry sense of humor. I will note that the recipes are not meant for the beginner - many are just proportions rather than actual measurements as you'd find in more modern cocktail books. As a reference for making sure you are recreating a classic recipe though, there isn't anything better. It's a piece of history and a useful reference at the same time.

Classic cocktail recipes

I haven't used this book much but one thing I do like about it is the way they present the drink recipes. Basically, they are all in fractions of the total so you might have (for example) 1/4 ingredient #1, 1/2 ingredient #2, and 1/4 ingredient #3 so it all adds up to 1.0. So if you want four ounces in your cocktail, you know you need to have 1 ounce of #1, etc. The recipes are classic recipes but since the book was written in 1930, there are no recipes for more modern drinks such as a Mojito. Also, the drinks are all organized alphabetically regardless of the main type of spirit (gin, vodka, etc.) Overall, its a good cocktail book.

I really enjoyed this for the short read it was. I'm curious who lord herdon is that's mentioned in the last chapter.

Wasted Potential

This novella is a variation on the Beauty and the Beast theme. It's a well used plot because it works and this rendering had great promise. Unfortunately the author, who has shown in other works that she can do much better, seems to have phoned this one in - literally. There are mistakes in wording, such as "made" instead of "maid", that scream of the use of voice recognition software without adequate proofreading. There are many mistakes a good editor should have caught. Also, she started several themes and never followed through; one example is the attack on the heroine-a footman was badly injured but we never hear of him again. In most novels about the period he would have been brought home, a doctor summoned, and vengeance sought on his behalf. Not here. It's truly a shame. I enjoyed reading this, and particularly liked the characters. The author did the story, and her readers, a disservice by getting lazy and not rounding out her tale or polishing it before publication. Lastly, this very short work was priced the same as her full length novels three or more times longer. A bit of a cheat there.

I liked this book. The hero had been attacked and left for dead -- and his attacker was still at large and still a very real threat. After recovering physically from his wounds the hero had kept to his home in the daytime and went out at night -- he was disfigured, causing people to gasp, make rude comments and stare. While out one evening he hears a woman's scream and spots a woman running from a carriage.

The heroine was running from her stepfather. The man had sold her to an abbess, a woman who runs a brothel. The hero rescues her and takes her to his home. She makes it clear she would rather offer herself to him willingly than to be forced to have sex with hundreds of men.

The hero is starved for female companionship. He had been engaged but the young woman died -- it was rumored she killed herself rather than wed him. But the hero had doubts and suspected she had been murdered. He realised the heroine was a lady and deserved better so he offers her marriage -- to be performed immediately. Did I mention he was starved?

Of course the heroine is beautiful and has a luscious figure. She feels an immediate connection to him and isn't afraid to give herself to him. She sees the man not the scars, and she thinks he is the most handsome man in the world.

I liked that the heroine had a good heart and was spirited in a way that was admirable. Usually spirited heroines are foolish and do stupid things. This one does not.

Overall a good story and I recommend it.

About the Author
Dr. Jeff Sauro is a six-sigma trained statistical analyst and founding principal of MeasuringU, a customer experience research firm based in Denver. For over fifteen years he’s been conducting usability and statistical analysis for companies such as Google, eBay, Walmart, Autodesk, Lenovo and Drobox or working for companies such as Oracle, Intuit and General Electric.

Jeff has published over twenty peer-reviewed research articles and five books, including Customer Analytics for Dummies. He publishes a weekly article on user experience and measurement online at measuringu.com.

Jeff received his Ph.D in Research Methods and Statistics from the University of Denver, his Masters in Learning, Design and Technology from Stanford University, and B.S. in Information Management & Technology and B.S. in Television, Radio and Film from Syracuse University. He lives with his wife and three children in Denver, CO.

Dr. James R. (Jim) Lewis is a senior human factors engineer (at IBM since 1981) with a current focus on the measurement and evaluation of the user experience. He is a Certified Human Factors Professional with a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology (Psycholinguistics), an M.A. in Engineering Psychology, and an M.M. in Music Theory and Composition. Jim is an internationally recognized expert in usability testing and measurement, contributing (by invitation) the chapter on usability testing for the 3rd and 4th editions of the Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics, presenting tutorials on usability testing and metrics at various professional conferences, and serving as the keynote speaker at HCII 2014. He was the lead interaction designer for the product now regarded as the first smart phone, the Simon, and is the author of Practical Speech User Interface Design.

Jim is an IBM Master Inventor Emeritus with 88 patents issued to date by the US Patent Office. He serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, is co-editor in chief of the Journal of Usability Studies, and is on the scientific advisory board of the Center for Research and Education on Aging and Technology Enhancement (CREATE). He is a member of the Usability Professionals Association (UPA), the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), the ACM Special Interest Group in Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI), past-president of the Association for Voice Interaction Design (AVIxD), and is a 5th degree black belt and certified instructor with the American Taekwondo Association (ATA).

Whether you're conducting large sample research projects or small ones, "Quantifying the user experience" is the most comprehensive and pragmatic statistical handbook I've seen that systematically explains various statistical methods for drawing reliable conclusions or determining the optimal sample sizes. Great resource for conducting surveys, A/B tests or (and here they really shine) small sample usability testing projects.

Rather than starting with a description of various statistical theories, the authors begin with specific user research scenarios and then introduce the theoretical methods they feel most suitable for planning or analyzing these scenarios. They don't shy away from sharing their pragmatic preferences for particular methods, based on their own experience working in the field.

I find the book useful also beyond user experience testing scenarios - it is a great resource for any user-oriented research, including various types of marketing research.

Well done how Jeff introduced me into Measuring the User Experience

First things first: Thank you, Jeff! I can not say how oftenI told myself (and also "bugged" my colleagues with it) that I am so glad to have read this book. As a solid fundament for the statistical part to my master thesis concerning usability I was looking for some material. THIS book gave me everything I have needed so far.

By following it chapter through chapter, Jeff will run you through the most important statistical tools and knowledge that is necessary for you to actually measure the user experience. I have read this within three days, marked every little spot that seemed to be important and after this I was planning my studies. Impossible to say how happy I was, when I saw that Jeff is also spending a whole chapter on questionaires. For example, he will explain why the have to be undergone "psychometric qualification" (totally new information for me). But you wont be left alone with this information. Right after he is sheding light on the most common questionaire types (post task and post test questionaires) plus the statistical analysis.

I could be writing a lot more here at this point (and I probably will when my thesis is done) but for now let me tell you: Read this book and see how interesting/helpful and essential statistics are when doing user research.

Great resource for quant work in user research!

I've been waiting for a book like this for a long time. Most of my user research consulting work is qualitative, but I'm periodically faced with running benchmark usability studies or designing other quantitative user research projects that involve inferential statistics. No more dusting off old college stats textbooks. This book and its Excel and R Companion book are a one-stop shop for determining appropriate quantitative research methods and statistical tests to use in UX work. The authors draw many practical examples from usability studies, tie statistical theory together with practice when using small sample sizes, and even include a crash course in statistical concepts as an appendix. I've been a fan of Jeff Sauro's website for several years now and am very pleased that he and Jim Lewis have authored this exceptional resource.

life changing in two days

This work is a genuine breakthrough in self-help literature.It involves the use of one very effective technique which can be used in the morning, in the evening and all day for that matter. It involves using the subconscious to your own advantage. Instead of using positive thinking and affirmations which are resisted by the subconscious, the author suggests asking questions of the subconscious e.g. why am I confident? why am I happy? Why am I so grateful for all that i have got? A seven-year-old girl even asked the question"why am I so enchanting"? The system turns Emile Coué on his head. Instead of saying "day by day I am getting better and better in every way" you should say "why is it that I am getting better and better in every way in every day"? The subconscious cannot reject any proposition because it receives a question and then it has to find answers.Of course you are not conscious of what the answers are because they remain in the subconscious but within days you feel more confident, optimistic and upbeat. A behaviourist or rational emotive therapist might suggest that you use a rubber band on your wrist and sting yourself each time you think a negative or destructive thought. The afformation technique shortcuts such thoughts in the first place. It is so easy to apply and it is what we do anyway, with the difference that we are asking better questions. The author shows us how to form questions that will get rid of self-critical trash talk. I've tried many things for the last 40 years but this is by far the best. I've tried Norman Vincent Peale, Albert Ellis, Tony Robbins,visualisation and affirmations.I got results in two days and that voice in my head that said I was inadequate has ceased now for nine months and counting. I can't recommend this book highly enough and only wish that I had read it 30 years ago.

What a wonderful simple easy to use system, turning a common trait (asking why questions) into a powerful healing tool. I cannot imagine how I got along without it. I highly recommend this book.

Useful tool for changing your mindset

I really do like Noah's "invention" of afformations, it makes sense to me. I've used them with good results. I do find that his reading style on this cd is a little more cutesy than I like. He seems like a great guy with some real insights but I'd like to hear someone else read the book. Other than that, I'd recommend his books and cd's because I think there's some really excellent things to learn from them.

About the Author
In the late 1970s Bill McKim was an attorney in Torrance, California, where he had a real estate law practice. He lived across the street from where a housing bubble began. He watched and marveled as prices of houses around him doubled, then tripled, in price, in a matter of months, without any change in the value of those houses as dwellings. From that time on, he viewed housing bubbles differently than did anyone else. By the time the third housing bubble had burst in 2008 he knew that 1) the bubbles are caused by a Homemania, and not by the activities of individuals or groups of individuals, 2) the Homemania causes an investment to exist which pays a very high rate of return with no apparent risk, 3) such an investment inevitably draws investment capital away from other investments, 4) the investment creates very little wealth and causes a great increase in the consumption of wealth, leaving the country much, much poorer, 5) the bubble cannot be controlled by regulation, once it occurs, 6) bubbles can be prevented by taxation, and 7) nobody was aware of any of this. Since that time, a number of books have been written, and television productions aired, about the most recent housing bubble. They have not shed light on the true nature of bubbles and their effect on the economy, though, because their creators had not had the experience of seeing a housing bubble form. These books and television productions are almost always driven by an attempt to pin the blame for the financial disaster on some individual or group of individuals. The truth is that no one was responsible for creating the disaster, but that everybody was equally ignorant about what was happening. Now we are in the midst of an election campaign to select a President and a Congress whose most important and most urgent task will be to quickly enact a tax reform that will prevent housing bubbles from occurring in the future. No candidate has any idea that such a task exists, nor any understanding of why we are in the present economic crisis, nor what should be done to cope with it. That is why this book was written. It explains what a Homemania is, with ten more Steps to Understanding which remove all impediments to learning the truth about the current crisis and how to deal with it.

Horrible explanations

This book is not a very in-depth book on the principles of california real estate. It covered topics only very breifly, and really sped through them with not a whole lot of explanation. I would highly advise buying a different book if you intend to pass the CA Real Estate Licensing Exam.

Helped ME pass the test.

This is an excellent general introduction to the principles of California real estate. I passed the broker's exam on the first try with no experience as a real estate salesperson and no cram course. This book was a great help in preparing for it. A large percentage of the test questions deal with the principles covered in this book.
