Damned by faint praise

This is one of the rare Kindle books where the author allows you a true preview of a book (so many "samples" just give you the copyright page and other front pages with not enough value to make a reliable content-based purchasing decision). Unfortunately, Mr. Thie wrote the Preface, introducing his own doubt about the main author's "speculation" while promoting, and directing the reader to, his family's "Touch for Health" system. While the book's premise is about providing help and correction via revealing the knowledge contained within one's own body, Mr. Thie continues to promote his family's system instead of the principal author's by blatantly asserting that his family's system doesn't teach or believe in working on oneself.

In contrast, the Table of Contents appears to promise tests and corrections. As a dowser, I appreciate the author's connection to the pendulum as it provides an eye-opening experience to the holder, who knows he us not consciously creating motion in the pendulum (in fact, it feels to me as if something has taken control of the pendulum's movement, as the hanging "dead weight" of it disappears at that moment). A good dowsing book to serve as a companion would be "Dowsing Beyond Duality" by David Cowan and Erina Cowan.

My suggestion is to get the book and don't read the front matter. To the author, I strongly suggest deleting Mr. Thiel's Preface, which can single-handedly kill sales through the Kindle sample alone via damning witb faint praise, or at the minimum, introducing doubt and confusion.

Excellent Reference

I needed a reference guide for Quicken 2004. After purchasing the Dummies version, this book is by far the better text. It provides clear, concise information with screen shots for all aspects of Quicken 2004 including items you may not know about. (Records Organizer Household Organizer!) Those were not mentioned in the other text. She gives suggestions for how to set up your files the way that you want. I highly recommend this book whether you are an expert or just beginning. It is well worth the price!

About the Author
Paul Wagar trained as an actor in London, England, and worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Stratford Festival in Canada, and the New Shakespeare Company, with whom he toured India and Sri Lanka. He was the Artistic Director of Toronto Repertory Theatre, Philadelphia Area Repertory Theatre, and Ark Theatre Company in Los Angeles. He taught for nine years in Oxford, England for the British American Drama Academy, was head of Voice at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, teaches in Hollywood for Theatre of Arts, and is an Associate Adjunct Professor at UCLA.

Good for the beginner or actor in training. Expensive.

While the author's credentials and experience cannot be denied, his book unfortunately reads as choppy at times and offers little in-depth detail or new insight into voice, speech and text. On the other hand, the book is very straight-forward and to the point, which I think may be good for beginners or actors who are early in training. For most actors who have had some solid training in voice, speech and text,(one or two years of training including some phonetics) this book would likely be basic.

I was particularly disappointed in the high cost (compared to other quality books on these subjects) and the size of the font. I thought that the high cost would be reflected in the quality and depth of material, but upon receiving it, I felt that I got less than what I paid for. The font is large (perhaps font 14 or even 16), the lines appear to be double spaced, (a lot of white space here) and includes several oversized photos. This all takes up precious real estate on the page. Obviously this makes it easy to read, but again, I did feel duped into thinking that I would receive twice as much material. Label should read: "Extra Large Font" or some such so the consumer is aware. If the book was written in a normal font (font 12) and the layout was more economical in use of space, it likely would come in at 100 pages or so; in my opinion, the price is very high for what you get. I do think the book is worth having if you buy the Kindle version, but if you want the paperback, you can get better material for much less.

What Wagar does do, which is unique (as far as I know), is to provide material on voice, text, phonetics/speech and a Classic American dialect all in one book, and he manages to do it concisely (no frills or bonus material here). The downside is that with such a broad range of material, he doesn't do it justice. The cost, layout and basic material made me want to give 2 stars, but given the range of material, I would have to give it 2 and half (no option to do that here). As a professional actor and teacher, I certainly don't mind paying for good quality material, but I don't think that my rating would change even if the price was significantly less. Purchase if you want one resource of basic material on these subjects and don't mind paying extra for it.

Useful text with no fluff or filler -- great gift for actors (aspiring or established)

No filler, fluff, or pointless anecdotes -- just useful, direct, clearly well-informed info from clearly skilled and experienced actor/director/teacher with impressive credentials. Price seems miniscule compared to cost of author's class at UCLA or Oxford University. A valuable addition to any actor's (or public speaker's) reference library to learn and brush up skills. Also a great gift to aspiring actors. (I gave two as gifts and got great feedback from both recipients.)

About the Author
Edward S. Neukrug is the former Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling and currently Professor of Counseling and Human Services at Old Dominion University, Dr. Edward S. Neukrug has taught counselor education and human services for over thirty years. In addition, he has worked as a substance abuse counselor, a counselor at a crisis center, an outpatient therapist at a mental health center, an associate school psychologist, a school counselor, and as a private practice psychologist and licensed professional counselor. Dr. Neukrug has written dozens of articles and chapters in books, has authored eight books, and was the editor of THE SAGE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THEORY IN COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY. Books he has written include: EXPERIENCING THE WORLD OF THE COUNSELOR: A WORKBOOK FOR COUNSELOR EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS (4th Edition); COUNSELING THEORY AND PRACTICE; SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR HUMAN SERVICE PROFESSIONALS; and ESSENTIALS OF TESTING AND ASSESSMENT FOR COUNSELORS, SOCIAL WORKERS, AND PSYCHOLOGISTS (3rd Edition). Excellent history with many illustrations!

From their humble beginnings,to the time the book came out,this book covers a lot of ground.The designers,the machines themselves,legal battles,innovations,the insights,and of course,all of the rich illustrations(The back glasses,tables,flyers,cabinets,designers,etc.),make you feel like you're a part of it.Anyone delving into the history of the art,or the game,would be facinated and well informed by reading this book!

Good book for what's in it. I was just expecting more verity of machines. I was under the emprestion there was more machines than what I found to be in the book.

About the Author

At her death in 2005, Carol Seefeldt, Ph.D., was Professor Emeritus of human development at the Institute for Child Study, University of Maryland, College Park. She received the Distinguished Scholar-Researcher award from the university and published 25 books and over 100 scholarly and research articles for teachers and parents. Her books include Social Studies for the Preschool/Primary Child, Active Experiences for Active Children (Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics), and Current Issues in Early Childhood Education. She also wrote Playing to Learn and Creating Rooms of Wonder. She coauthored Early Childhood: Where Learning Begins-Geography for the U.S. Department of Education.

 

During her 40 years in the field, Dr. Seefeldt taught at every level from nursery school for 2-year-olds through third grade. She frequently conducted teacher-training programs in the United States, Japan, and Ukraine. Carol's research revolved around program development and evaluation. Her contributions to the field were extraordinary and her influence carries on.

 

Sharon Castle is a retired Associate Professor of Education at George Mason University. She taught early childhood and elementary socials studies, fine arts, creativity and play, and research courses. Her most recent area of research was Professional Development Schools. She also studied children’s creative and artistic development and school change. She received her Masters in Child Development from Iowa State University and her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Maryland, College Park.

 

Renee C. Falconer is a semi-retired Associate Professor of Education at George Mason University. She teaches child development and curriculum courses. She has taught children in countries all over the world (including United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Kenya and the US) for 20 years and has taught teachers in the eastern, western and southern United States. She received her Masters in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Carolina and her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction/Early Childhood and Multicultural Education from Utah State University.
