Harry's Transition to Adulthood, Growing French Level

This is, again, a perfect means to improve your French grammar for any anglophone who has fallen in love with the series in English. Reading it in French is just as pleasurable as in English, as the translation is superb. The names of characters, in particular, make this book worth the read in French. Furthermore, as the series progresses to have a more adult overtone, the level of French becomes more grammatically difficult, allowing for better incorporation of the French language. By no means is this book difficult to read in French, yet it is a perfect way, again, to improve your language skills as well as to reenter the world of Harry Potter!

I bought it used, but there were just a few bent pages and it was otherwise in perfect condition. I'm in my fourth year of high school French, but I can understand it without a dictionary; I would recommend using a dictionary or side-by-side reading with the English version though, you can be sure you're not mistranslating words from the context. The translation is pretty direct, and it's fun to read. Looking forward to getting the other books in the series as soon as I finish this one.

This book successfully combines scientific research and knowledge of the earth's creation with revealed revelation contained in the fullness of the gospel. This book is based on a class that Gary and Dain did with a group of men. I found this book absolutely fascinating. Being raised primarily by my Dad I tend to think more like guys do but I still found a number of surprises in this book. Every woman should read it because it gives you some insights about who men are and be. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!!

About the Author
James A. Henretta is a Professor Emeritus of American History at the University of Maryland, College Park. His publications include The Evolution of American Society, 1700-1815: An Interdisciplinary Analysis; "Salutary Neglect": Colonial Administration under the Duke of Newcastle; Evolution and Revolution: American Society, 1600-1820; The Origins of American Capitalism; and an edited volume, Republicanism and Liberalism in America and the German States, 1750-1850. Recent publications include "Magistrates, Common Law Lawyers, Legislators: The Three Legal Systems of British America," in The Cambridge History of Law in America and "Charles Evans Hughes and the Strange Death of Liberal America," in Law and History Review, derived from his ongoing research on the liberal state in America: New York, 1820-1975. During his career, Henretta taught at Sussex, Princeton, UCLA, and Boston University. He served as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Australia and as the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University. Rebecca Edwards is a Professor of History at Vassar College. Her research interests focus on the post-Civil War era and include electoral politics, environmental history, and the history of women and gender roles. She is the author of Angels in the Machinery: Gender in American Party Politics from the Civil War to the Progressive Era and New Spirits: Americans in the "Gilded Age," 1865-1905. She is currently working on a biography of women's rights advocate and People's Party orator Mary E. Lease. Robert O. Self is Professor of History at Brown University. His research focuses on urban history, American politics, and the post-1945 United States. He is the author of American Babylon: Race and the Struggle for Postwar Oakland, which won four professional prizes, including the James A. Rawley Prize from the Organization of American Historians, and All in the Family: The Realignment of American Democracy Since the 1960s. He is currently at work on a book about the centrality of houses, cars, and children to family consumption in the twentieth-century United States. About the Author
Megan MacKenzie is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney. Her research centers on gender and security. Her book Female Soldiers in Sierra Leone: Sex, Security and Post-Conflict Development (2012) included interviews with over 50 female soldiers who participated in Sierra Leone's civil war.

A fascinating examination of a commonly accepted "truth"!

MacKenzie lays out the parallel and mutually supporting social phenomena that established and then sustained an emotion based policy. Perhaps the best chapter in the book is Chapter 3 where she examines how beliefs and emotions shape policy, often to the detriment of good decision making. In this chapter MacKenzie groups the arguments against women into those that are “gut reactions, divine concerns, and threats to nature.” Then she details how the gut, God and nature are “harnessed” to seemingly objective data. By following MacKenzie’s bread crumb trail one sees how emotion, shaped by cultural norms and beliefs, defied rational logic and sustained a policy of self-deception.

This is a fascinating examination of how assumptions about the "natural order" of the human experience are artificially constructed and then perpetuated. It takes great thinkers like MacKenzie to help us deconstruct and analyze the foundations of our lived experiences.

Excellent account of an important American myth

An excellent, well researched account of the band of brothers myth that dominates American conversations about the military. I might quibble with some of the details, such as how the myth emerged (I'd point to WWI rather than Vietnam), but overall Mackenzie offers a compelling argument supported by solid evidence. While the book is aimed most directly at the combat exclusion, it also has important implications for thinking about why soldiers fight and the roots of combat effectiveness. I highly recommend it.

Though war is changing, myths remain. MacKenzie's accurate synopsis of the state of affairs regarding women's exclusion from front line roles in the U.S. military is a welcome addition to the literature. Highlighting the difference between myth and reality throughout, she provides reasoned at times hilarious/scary objections to the inclusion of women on the front line - sharks theoretically being attracted to women on their menstrual cycle in SEAL teams being just one..Facepalm.
Deriving much intellectual inspiration from Cynthia Enloe who states that idea of 'manliness and "respectable women" are seminal in militarization and war', MacKenzie furthers this by highlighting that the 'Band of Brothers' myth is central to the perpetuation of a romanticized version of war and that unraveling this myth is central in demystifying and ending wars. Following on from her impressive work on female soldiers in post-conflict Sierra Leone, this book furthers MacKenzie's status as one of the leading thinkers on female soldiers in conflicts the world over.
