less than I expected

Based on the pedigree of the authors and price of the book I expected more information. Is there need for another introduction to acoustics?

The sections on Tools and Examples did not provide enough information for me. In some ways these chapters read like an article written in a trade maagzine. IE,'.. the facility had this issue ___, we did ___ and everyone is happy now....'

I hoped to find more detail on the analyses of an acoustical problem, and detail on why and how a solution was determined.

So if this is a single text introduction to architectural acoustics it's OK. I think Architectural Acoustics by Mehta, Johnson & Rocafort, Marshall Long (see my review), or Acoustics and Noise Control for Architects and Builders by Irvine and Richards are more informative and a better value.

A basic acoustic introduction

This book is easy to read with many practical examples described in simple basic acoustical or structural terms. It is a very good place to start for those who are just beginning but for those with experience or previous training it offers little technical or detailed information nor acoustical equations. As a basic overview it is fine and the resource section is very useful.

"A search for authenticity in industrial American life"?that's what historian Rossinow (history, Metropolitan State Univ.) has identified as the main thrust of the New Left movement that powered the youth-driven political and social revolutions of the 1960s. He argues that the New Left resulted from a reaction to traditional American liberalism, which was seen by New Leftists as "elite-based," and from the influence of Christian existentialism, which redefined "sin" as "alienation" and "salvation" as "authenticity." Rossinow meticulously analyzes the interplay of academic politics and Texas state politics on the campus of the University of Texas, Austin, and shows how the New Left formed its organizational structure and ideological basis. This is a carefully researched, creative, and intriguing reinterpretation of American history. His thesis concerning the influence of Christian existentialism is overextended and the book is somewhat repetitive. But Rossinow's emphasis on the New Left's concerns with personal wholeness makes the idea of a continuum between the 1960s and the 1970s more palatable. Quest for Meaning

Doug Rossinow argues for a broader definition of the New Left than has been common among historians of the 1960s. He constructs an atmosphere of anxiety and personal and spiritual alienation as the setting for youth activism, and he places the search for authenticity--the antithesis of separation from God and part of the existentialist quest for meaning in late capitalist society--at the center of New Left activity from its beginning in the late fifties. "[T]he most organized and most politically consequential source of existentialist ideas in this era . . . was the student Christian movement of the nation's campuses" (pp. 5-6). This movement developed much of its momentum at the University of Texas--Austin, where, not coincidentally, the largest and most active New Left coalition in the South and Southwest emerged. Shifting from Austin to the national scene and back again, Rossinow thus widens the lens for viewing and defining the New Left and for analyzing its grievances and goals. He concludes that "the new left was less an outgrowth of a continuous history of radical politics in the United States than the evanescent leftist branch of a search for authenticity in industrial American life" (p. 345).

This book had a profound effect on the direction of my research in grad school. In view of the political disaffection, spiritual anomie, and economic difficulties that have re-energized social contestation all over the world, particularly in the United States, it continues to inspire me and seems more relevant than ever to the non-academic audience.

Nothing but the facts...

Rossinow paints a detailed picture at the activist life of the University of Texas during the days of the SDS and SNCC. It is amazing that someone like himself, who wasn't there and is much younger than the participants, can create such a tale. I'm too young to have been there also, but I've had the opportunity to meet some of these incredible people in my time here at UT-Austin. The activist blood still runs warm here, and will for years to come, and it is because of the people Rossinow has chronicled in this book. Want to know how things happened? Here it is. Unlike many histories of the New Left, which emphasize its exceptionalism and separatism, this one emphasizes the Left's continuing conversations with other traditions of American reform-Christian evangelicalism, the Social Gospel, the lyrical Left, mainstream feminism--even liberalism. For example, Rossinow stresses the importance of the populist liberalism of the Lone Star State to the social construction of the Texas New Left. Early leftists were encouraged by liberals like Ronnie Dugger, and later leftists found that they could form some constructive coalitions with liberals. While Rossinow acknowledges the general hostility of the Left to liberalism, he also shows that leftists could be creatively eclectic and inconsistent in forming coalitions.

Like other Sixties analysts, Rossinow shows how, as Kurt Vonnegut said, "America radicalizes Americans." Indeed, non-leftists shaped the late Sixties Left by their intransigence and their attacks. University repression, Black Power, and the Vietnam War also drew leftists away from the optimistic assumptions of the early years. Still, this backlash also led to the richness of "new working class" analysis, which Rossinow explains extraordinarily well. The idea that "alienation isn't restricted to the poor" (p. 194) allowed leftists a wider range for radicalism, interrogating most of the institutions of American society. When the Vietnam War ended, and the national Left disintegrated, this wide-ranging cultural activism was what was left.

By the end of the decade, the emphasis on authenticity, coupled with the intransigence of the political "System" and the factionalism of the Left, led activists to an emphasis on cultural change through counter-cultural living. Instead of overthrowing American government, they would undermine American society by creating a new society in the shell of the old. Like the New Left, the counter-culture emphasized authenticity. Indeed, Rossinow suggests that "starting in 1966, counter-cultural activity became "the new left's most important strategy for fomenting social change in America" (p. 251). Like the lyrical Left of the early twentieth century, this prefigurative politics had its own (usually small, usually local) successes, but it also succeeded in bringing cultural issues into mainstream American politics, most often in the Democratic Party. And as Rossinow points out, it complemented the cultural modernism of the American middle classes. In either case, cultural radicalism became cultural meliorism, and reinforced the liberal individualism of the mainstream culture.

This book is valuable, not just for its own original and nuanced interpretation of Sixties politics, but for its historiographical insights. Rossinow knows virtually all of the literature on Sixties politics, and, both in the text and in the footnotes, he sets his interpretation in conversation with other Sixties analysts. The result is not just a first-rate monograph that complexifies the Sixties, but a guided tour of important scholarly thinking about that decisive decade.

Flying the F4F Wildcat early in the Pacific war, pilots were trying to gain the upper hand against the superior Japanese A6M Zero. But their Wildcats lacked speed, rate of climb and maneuverability. But with the new F4U Corsair, pilots found that the F4U was more than a match for Japanese fighters.
Corsairs evolved from the early 'bird cage' F4U-1As, to the later F4U-1Ds, these planes struck fear in Japanese pilots who dared go against the 'whistling death'.

This book is an early book of Ospreys 'Aircraft of the aces' series.
I found the first hand accounts a little heavy in this book. Now, I like first hand accounts from aces, but this book contains 85% first hand accounts and 15% information from the author. The first hand accounts were only from a few aces, so you only get limited variety of information on the aces. I was also a little disappointed that there was not more information on Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington, who is one of the most famous USMC aces of the Pacific. Thus 4 stars instead of my usual 5.
I like the later Osprey books with balanced information from the author and first hand accounts from aces.
I did find that the pictures, color plates of both planes and pilots were well done.
If you want to read about Corsair aces about WWII, then buy the book, but you'll have more first hand accounts than information on aces.

A broad overview of the Corsair in World War II

The Corsair is hands down my favorite fighter of World War II, so I might be a little biased in my review. This books provides a very broad overview of the Corsair and the men who flew it in World War II, with several first-hand accounts of action against Japanese aircraft. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book also contained chapters on the Royal Navy's use of the Corsair, as well as the Royal New Zealand Air Force's.

Since this is one of the earliest books in Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series, it just scratches the surface of the Corsair's service. Units such as VMF-214 (The Black Sheep) and VF-17 (The Jolly Rogers) get a bit more ink than others, but since the book is only 96 pages long, one can't expect details on every unit. The color plates are very nice, but since the U.S. Navy and Marines tended to not decorate their planes very much, they tend to all look fairly similar.

Pick up Walter Musciano's "Corsair Aces", Barrett Tillman's "Corsair" and Bruce Gamble's "Swashbucklers and Black Sheep" for greater details about the legendary Corsair.

Great book! Lots of information and picutres!

Mark Styling and Jerry Scutts have given the air enthusiasts, historians, and Corsair buffs another one in Osprey's "Aircraft of the Aces" series. Like the others, Corsair Aces of World War 2 contains a great deal of information and carefully selected photos. It has the usual collection of excellent illustrations, particularly color prints. This book covers a much overlooked area of aviation history dealing with Corsairs in the Pacific Theater and includes our allies. This book gives these outstanding pilots their due. Perfect for US Navy, US Marine Corps, and Allied Corsair enthusiasts. It is a great book and I recommend it highly. Corsair Aces of World War 2 is well worth having for anyone interested in the exploits of Corsair fighter pilots.

The Complete Father Brown, G. K. Chesterton

This is the complete collection of Gilbert Keith Chesterton's "Father Brown" detective stories. Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes" specialized in the collection and analysis of evidence, the new science of trace evidence in the late 19th century. "Holmes" used deductive reasoning from minute clues to solve a crime. "Brown" used the method of observation of people and inductive reasoning to solve a crime. "Brown" tries to think as the criminal would and solves crimes that way. If you can discover the motive then you can discover the perpetrator. It works very good in fiction. This technique can be misused today to create false confessions by psychological manipulation.

Most of these stories are quite short as if written for a magazine. You get a description of events as seen by other people, then a solution follows, with an explanation. The clues are subtle and based on people's actions, the ending surprising. Most written stories don't reveal the ending until the last pages or chapters. In films you often know who did it, the suspense arises as to how they will get caught. But there are variations on these plots. These stories are always entertaining and amusing, even if some details are now as extinct as a horse and buggy, or may seem improbable. There are fifty-one stories.

Gives you some things to think about

I read this book as a requirement for a Dispensationalism class in Seminary. It gives you a look at what Progressive Dispensationalists believe. Since I am a classic Dispensationalist, I did not agree with much of the book. However, it helped me to understand their position. I wrote a paper on their view and subsequently received an A so the book did its job.

Something All Diligent Lay Christians Must Read

I am not a Christian with fanciful theological degrees from one of the acclaimed seminaries. No, I'm strictly a lay believer who loves the Lord and strives to understand His ways and His will. Before coming to this book, I had studied the Bible with more than 30 commentaries and thought I knew something about God's Word. Boy, was I self-deceived.

You see, I had never ventured into the area of Biblical Theology (as opposed to Systematic Theology). I had always considered divine covenants to be nothing more than an historical footnote in the history of Israel, with little relevance for today's believer. Thanks to this book I now understand how covenants are probably the most important theme in Holy Scripture.

No, you don't need to be a dispensationalist to learn from this book (I'm not one). And don't be fooled by people who harbor strong suscipions about dispensational theology. There's nothing heretic about it's latest iteration, Progressive Dispensationalism. In fact, this book has only a relatively minor chapter on dispensations. Most of the book focuses on two important biblical themes: the covenants and the Kingdom of God.

One warning though: If you are a non-scholar like me, you'll probably find this book boring. But push your way through the pages and by the time you get to see how one covenant links to the next before finally arriving at the New Covenant, you will see the glorious redemptive plan of God. And when you get to the final chapter of the book, your soul will be overflowing with praise for the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
